Hi there, how are you today?
We are doing very well, blessed to have the opportunity to work with Centre-Stage and increase our musical presence internationally.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe yourself?
The Funky Dawgz Brass Band is bringing the music of the Big Easy to the North East! We are an 11-piece New Orleans-style brass band that is exploding onto the live music scene with a high-energy blend of brass and percussion. Though we are based in their home state of Connecticut, we are very much inspired by the rich musical heritage and traditions of the Crescent City. We offer an exciting mix of New Orleans favorites, original music, and add a brass twist to today’s top hits!

How did the band form? Where have you all come from?
The Funky Dawgz Brass Band was formed in early January of 2012 by Marvin McNeill, the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands and Marching Band at UConn. “New-Storrleans” is our hometown! In all serious though, we all met in college at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. We were all apart of the University of Connecticut Marching Band and various other musical ensembles at the University.

What is it about the New Orleans sound that inspires you?
The rich culture and history of the music is really want has captivated us. We have visited and performed down in New Orleans and have seen first hand and been a part of the true Brass Band tradition. It is a culture unlike any other that music permeates throughout its entire existence. The sense of family and camaraderie and the natural spirit is infectious and really that has inspired us the most.

Are there any artists that inspire you an why?
Rebirth Brass Band, Soul Rebels, Stooges Brass Band, Hot 8 Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Treme Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, TBC Brass Band, Lil Rascals Brass Band, New Birth Brass Band, Sugartone Brass Band, Youngblood Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, Lettuce, Glen David Andrews, and many more. We all try to listen and share with each other the latest tunes on our itunes because we all have unique tastes and personalities and its great to have that open dialogue as band members.

Is there a song you enjoy playing the most and why?
Not really, we enjoy playing all of our music because every song is different and we try to create a different vibe whenever we play.

When you’re not performing you’re inspiring the community with workshops, can you tell us more about your work? How does it feel to give back to the community?
We originally formed as a vehicle to connect, engage, inspire and rejuvenate music education in Connecticut’s inner city schools. And we frequently give performances and master classes to young musicians in elementary, middle, and high schools across the state. It is inspiring to us to not only have the opportunity to give back but to be able to go back to places where we grew up as kids and help out. A few members of the band are music educators by day so it was only natural for us to get back into our communities across the state.

What do you hope to bring to your audience? How do you want them to remember you?
From the first beat of the bass drum to the last stroke of the snare, the Funky Dawgz Brass Band will always “Shut It Down”!

What has been the most memorable venue/ performance so far?
July 10th and 11th, 2015- Madison Square Garden- Horn Section for Dispatch
